Apr 21, 2025 | Labs

Compra con Propósito is a United Nations initiative in Ecuador that aims to strengthen the economic inclusion of entrepreneurs in vulnerable situations, including refugees, migrants, and local communities.

Through strategic partnerships with the private sector and cooperation agencies, this initiative promotes the creation of business opportunities, fostering a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable market in the country. With a focus on sustainable development, Compra con Propósito supports impact-driven businesses and contributes to the creation of dignified livelihoods.

In recent years, Compra con Propósito has positively impacted hundreds of entrepreneurs, facilitating their access to formal supply chains and expanding their commercial opportunities. Since its inception, the program has supported more than 150 ventures. Currently, 53 stores are part of the initiative, selling products from entrepreneurs participating in Compra con Propósito. Additionally, over 200 links to points of sale have been established since the program began.

This initiative has been key in creating networks of cooperation among the private sector, civil society, and government institutions, fostering a more resilient and participatory economy.

Business roundtables as a driver of inclusion

The business roundtables of Compra con Propósito are an effective mechanism to promote interaction between suppliers and buyers, facilitating the negotiation of sustainable commercial agreements. During these events, entrepreneurs have the opportunity to present their products and services in a structured environment, connecting with national and international companies interested in purchasing goods and services with social impact. Using specialized digital platforms, interactive catalogs, and networking sessions, the initiative encourages long-term commercial relationships, promoting economic inclusion and the generation of dignified employment.

For example, after the October 2024 business roundtable, nearly 100 products from entrepreneurs were placed in 28 new partner stores in cities such as Quito and Cuenca. This result clearly demonstrates the commercial impact generated by the program.

Along these lines, on April 3, a virtual business roundtable was held, generating 27 meetings between entrepreneurs and retail outlets in Guayaquil, Quito, Cuenca, and Manta. For program participants, these spaces not only promote commercial connections but also help strengthen their skills.

“Thanks to the business roundtables of the Compra con Propósito program, we have been able to place our products in new commercial spaces. For us, it has been a very valuable opportunity, not only for the increased sales but also for the contacts we’ve made and the visibility we’ve gained. Initiatives like this drive us as entrepreneurs and, above all, as part of a group that strives to move forward with quality products and purpose,” said Carolina Cantor, entrepreneur at Pescao Cao Cao.

With this event, Compra con Propósito reaffirms its commitment to strengthening inclusive economy in Ecuador, demonstrating that commerce with social impact is a viable and effective strategy to reduce economic gaps. The active participation of the private sector, along with the commitment of entrepreneurs and key actors, is essential for consolidating a more equitable and sustainable commercial ecosystem.

This business roundtable was promoted by UNHCR, FAO, IOM, and UNDP, with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and IMPAQTO.
